Synopsis by Kym Wright

In the Flower Arranging & Wreaths unit, learn the varieties of flowers and fillers; silk, plastic and natural plants; dried or preserved versus fresh, and the tools of the trade. The different bases, finishings and containers are covered, as are the diverse floral shapes available. Line, form, texture, color, balance, visual weight, harmony and scale are discussed, as are sources of inspiration and design projects. Learn to make bows, loops, streamers, and tendrils, while finding ways to make and attach wreaths. Special occasion floral arrangements are researched and taught, as are making "bundles" of flowers: posies, bouquets, hanging flowers, tussy-mussies, nosegays and ropes. One section covers the different methods for drying flowers and fillers by air, oven, microwave and chemicals. Learn to make beautiful paper stationery and stationary arrangements. The storage and care of floral designs is discussed along with setting up a financially prosperous business with a Business Plan included. Appendix listings include field trip ideas, internet websites to visit, a wonderful book list, and a form to analyze flora arrangements you see. Lesson plans and notes on how to use this unit round out the study. Similar to high school and college courses hailed as "Horticulture 352: Flower Arranging," this 90-page unit on Flower Arranging & Wreaths can be used as a semester or year-long high school course on horticultural arts.
